Houdin
Houdin

"Houdin" represents the Duke of Abruzzi's expedition, and he was imported direct from Archangel. He is the police dog, and is allowed free run of the yard and garden at night, because of his lovely growl; for he seldom barks, and so is just the dog to guard a house.
He plants bones all over the premises, and takes up the convenient attitude of assuming that anyone moving about at night is after his bones. A trespasser hearing him growl is not likely to remain.

Pearlene
Pearlene

"Pearlene" is a daughter of dogs born on Franz-Josephland during the Jackson-Harmsworth expedition. Being a female, she is a smaller dog than "Houdin", for with Samoyedes the bitches are smaller than the dogs.
She is very amusing and a great favourite with our children. When called she runs up with a wiggle of the back, as though the tail were wagging the body, and wrinkles up her nose, thus baring the upper teeth, She is really laughing, and will go through the performance any time when she is pleased, and asked to "Laugh, Pearlene."
