The “Arctic” Samoyeds

Headstudy of Gretha of the Arctic
GRETA OF THE ARCTIC

THE ” Arctic ” Samoyeds are famous throughout the world, and this year has but added fresh laurels to their world-wide reputation.

The beautiful illustrations show us the kennels as they are to-day. The most arresting photograph is that of Miss Keyte-Perry sitting with her happy family of ten champions-surely a record. In addition to these outstanding champions there are many other young ” Arctics ” now qualifying for supreme honours.

The picture of Ch. Leader of the Arctic and his progeny, Snowdrifter, Diva, Bruin, Silver Glow, and Ch. Greta, presents the actual exhibits shown by Miss Keyte-Perry at the Kennel Club in October last, when they won five first prizes and the ” Shirley ” Non-sporting Cup. Four out of the five were then still under two years of age.

The ” Arctic ” Kennel has always been noted for its superlative bitches, and two beautiful specimens are shown here in CH. GRETA OF THE ARCTIC and SILVER GLOW OF THE ARCTIC. The latter is a home-bred, being sired by Ch. Leader of the Arctic ex Ice Crystal of the Arctic.

CH. GRETA OF THE ARCTIC is the youngest champion bitch exhibited in this country. She is a superlatively lovely exhibit with a most beautiful head. Ch. Greta was bred by Mrs. Michael, being sired by her splendid Siberian Cymro ex Siberian Gloria. The latter is a daughter of Ch. Leader of the Arctic and was bred by Miss Keyte-Perry, so that Ch. Greta is of ” Arctic ” stock.

SILVER GLOW OF THE ARCTIC at 18 months won the challenge certificate at Harrogate this year, and was reserve for challenge certificate at the Kennel Club. She is a pure white bitch with a wonderful body and limbs. She carries a dense, stand-off coat, and has the added beauty of jet black points.

Another outstanding young bitch is RIONA OF THE ARCTIC, who was bred by Mrs. Michael and is a sister to Ch. Greta. Riona at 11 months old was awarded best bitch in show at the British Samoyed Club's specialist show last March-a great win for a puppy. GLINT OF THE ARCTIC, at 11 months, took first at Kensington Ch. Show in April last, and was then awarded reserve challenge certificate winner-another great triumph for a puppy. Both these young bitches have been in retirement with maternal duties during the latter part of the year, but they and some of their progeny will appear in the show ring during 1936.

The world-famous CH. KARA QUEEN has been gathering still more certificates this year, and she now possesses the grand total of 20-easily a record for any bitch in the breed. She is a worthy daughter of her famous sire, Ch. Kara Sea, and her beautiful dam, Arctic Echo, and Miss Keyte-Perry wishes to emphasise the honour of her breeding to Mrs. Timmins.

The greatest individual winner of the year has been the home-bred CH. SNOW CHIEF OF THE ARCTIC. He was sired by Zero of the Arctic ex Ch. Tchita. He was sold as a puppy to Mrs. Lucas but came back to Miss Keyte-Perry in the early spring, when his former mistress went to live abroad. He had been very little shown but even so held one challenge certificate. In three successive exhibitions he took the necessary three challenge certificates which made him a full champion. He was awarded best of breed at both the club fixtures, at the British Samoyed Club in March and at the Samoyed Association and Siberian Club show at Tattersall's in April. Several times he has been the best Non-sporting exhibit and twice he has won the honour of being the best exhibit of all breeds-a rare distinction for a Samoyed.

Miss Keyte-Perry rejoices in the fact that her Arctic stock are winning all the world over. In addition to the ten champions in the home kennel, the following list will show the ” Arctic ” strength throughout the whole breed:

Gretha of the Arctic
GRETA OF THE ARCTIC

Miss Keyte-Perry has given her whole-hearted devotion to this, her favourite breed, and her sympathetic treatment has been crowned with marked success. She gives her dogs every comfort and 1935 has seen still further improvements to what have always seemed unique and wonderful kennels. The ” Arctics ” are housed in pairs in beautiful little chalets, each building being provided with a big run. Each house has electric light and the most modern equipment, including a cupboard, grooming table, and bed. In the centre of the range come the domestic quarters, comprising a splendid kitchen and parlour. The latter is fully furnished and it is a wonderful sight to see several ” Arctics ” lying contentedly around. Thus are they house-trained.

The kennel staff are devoted to the dogs, and every ” Arctic ” receives individual treatment. This daily care is a great factor in their general welfare, and no dogs are more faultlessly put down in the show ring. Miss Murray Lurcock is the exhibition handler and she gets the very best out of her charges. Their show manners, like their appearance, are beyond reproach.

Miss Keyte-Perry is, delighted to welcome any guests to her famous kennels or to give any information about her favourite breed, on which she is a recognised authority. Visitors can be assured of a warm greeting, not only from her, but from all the happy family of ” Arctic ” Samoyeds
